I Will Be Free One Day vs. I Am Free Now

“Now this is the story all about how
My life got flipped, turned upside down” – Fresh Prince Theme Song

If you’re working a shitty job now purely for the money it provides, and you’re trying to save enough to start a side hustle or business or investment to ultimately save you from having to work that shitty job, then this article is for you.

In this article, I want to show you the difference in these two thought patterns as it relates to work and career, and how to move from feeling, living, and thinking “I will be free one day” to truly feeling and living “I am free now“.  This article come from lots of exploring of both sides.  I have lived both extremes, and I feel like I can help someone transition from one to the other.  Neither one is good or bad, they’ll just take you in two very different directions.

I Will Be Free One Day

You attract what you think and feel the most.  If you consistently think and feel “I will be free one day”,  then you must experience more of “I will be free one day”.  Your reality will shape itself to fit that story. In this scenario, you’re never free and you never will be – you’ll always and forever be chasing freedom one day.  It’s like the sign that says “Free Beer Tomorrow”.

If you’re in a shitty job you hate, and you’re thinking and feeling “I will be free one day”, I feel where you’re coming from.

I would think, “I’ll be free one day” all the time while I was working at all the different jobs I was working at.  I would always be working on a side business or dabbling in investing or trying to learn about passive income – all for the sake of escaping my current reality.  I would be working a job I hated then think thoughts like…

  • “If I could save up some money, then I could put it in an investment, make a lot of money and leave this job”.
  • “If I could build a business on the side, I could work on that business that would make a lot of money and leave this job”.

This line of thinking was the root cause of me living like I was stuck running around in circles.  I kept finding myself lacking money, needing a job to maintain some semblance of independence, and silently saying to myself “I will be free one day and escape all of this bullshit”.

I’ve seen other people have similar thoughts.  Here’s a popular one:

  • “If I could hit the lotto, I would win a lot of money and leave this job”.

The common denominator in these lines of thinking is escape from a current job…a current reality that you don’t want to be in.  It all stems from the thought – “I’ll be free one day”.

I Am Free Now

At any point you can inject being free now, and it works the same way.  Even injecting a little bit of embodying your freedom now will make an impact. If you consistently think and feel “I am free now”, then you must experience more of “I am free now”.  Your reality will shape itself to fit that story too if that’s your predominate thought.

One of the biggest insights that came from sitting in my own freedom was that I wouldn’t do things I hated just for the money.  If I’m really free, then I could just drop that whole line of thinking.  As a result, money comes in very easily because I’m not as needy with it.  I’m not sacrificing so much of myself for it.

Also, so many more options become visible.  An infinite amount of options are always available, but they become visible to you because you’re looking for them, and not spending so much time slaving away at a job.  For example, if you’re having problems with money, you can sit down and have the space to learn all about it.  You can sit down and learn about credit, business, the history of money, investing and being early in projects, neediness vs abundance, living well within your means, earning more, scaling, stocks, crypto, passive income etc. You can go exploring down any avenue you want!  What a badass feeling!

Living “I am free now” will lead to questions like:

  • “What do I want to do today?”
  • “Where does the energy want to go today?”
  • “What needs to be done today?”
  • “What rabbit hole do I want to go down?” (lengthy periods of freedom allows you to explore things way deeper than you can when your focus is split working a job)

In relation to your work, this way of living might elicit questions like:

  • “What is my audience needing from me right now?”
  • “How can I connect with my audience?” “
  • What do I need to be at peak performance?”

Even while you’re working a shitty job, “I am free now” can elicit questions like:

  • “How do I enhance the small amount of freedom I’m experiencing when I’m not working?”
  • “What’s one step I can do now that truly expresses and embodies my freedom?”
    • “How can I do express and embody this freedom consistently?”

Where did this line of thinking come from?

I can tell I learned “I will be free one day” from my mother.  She probably learned it from her mother.  Ultimately, I believe it comes from slavery – at least for me.  When I look at slavery in the United States, it wasn’t that long ago, we were slaves for a LONG time (350+ years), and there hasn’t been a sufficient bridge to freedom internally.  Even after the declaration to free slaves, there was still so much post-slavery slavery going on.  Former slaves had access to nothing as newly free people, so they had to keep working to survive.  I wonder at what point did we drop the frame of being slaves trying to escape?

To me, the internet has been the best bridge.  Through the internet, I can now deliver value to anyone in the world who has access to the internet.  Still, the problem is internal.  I can still create my own shitty job even on the internet if I’m still feeling like “I’ll be free one day”.

Success/Outcomes is Secondary, The Enjoyment of the Doing is Primary

Here was a great video by Eckhart Tolle. His answers are often so good and relevant to what I’m going through at different points in time. This video had a lot to do with how I’m planning this upcoming quarter. I loved how he talked about the relationship with the practice and the work that comes perceived success.

“The successes are nice for the ego, but the spiritual breakthroughs they come when you fail at something”.

Counterintuitive Solutions 150 150 admin

Counterintuitive Solutions

Over the years I’ve come across many counterintuitive solutions.  These solutions when I seek help from other people who have overcome the same problem and get out of my own thinking or I let go of finding the answer completely and move on to something else and then the answer just shows up.  When I find these answers they hit me like a ton of bricks and leave me stunned…like this ?

Here are the solutions I’ve found.

Weight Loss

I remember wanting to learn how to lose weight and just failing by focusing on weight loss.  Eventually, I just let go of the whole idea of trying to lose weight and I started focusing on health.  That’s when I found out about my food group and cut out sugar and flour and they actually taught me how to eat in a way where I could eat normal foods, was way happier, and kept losing weight in a way that felt effortless.

Intuitively I was overweight, so it made sense to focus on weight loss…that led me astray.  Focusing on health was way more effective and ironically resulted in me losing the most weight I’ve ever lost.

Money and Work

I remember wanting to learn how to earn a lot of money.  I wanted it sooo bad I was willing to take shitty jobs sacrifice everything else, work long hours of overtime.  It didn’t help.  My expenses rose to the level of my earnings and I was living paycheck to paycheck.  Eventually, I decided I would stop chasing money and accept the freedom I had.  It brought me face to face with the question – what would I do if I had all the money in the world.  I would write and work on music, so I really put tons of hours into writing and working on music, and my bank account is as big as it’s ever been.

When I was broke, it made sense to focus on getting a job and earning money.  Writing and sharing with people was my way of volunteering.  It brought about more flow socially and connected me with more people and it was pretty damn rewarding.  More rewarding than any check I ever got from a shitty job, and I think it was all because I didn’t chase money.

Social Circle

In the back of my mind, I would always see people who had big social circle and wonder how it happened for them.  AND…how were people so interested in them.

Eventually, I realized that one great way to attract others is not need others – to be content with yourself.  Do the things you want to do and find interesting.  Follow your own curiosities.  Accomplish the things you want to accomplish.  Have fun.  Stop beating yourself up over the past and learn to be happy with yourself.  Forgive yourself for bad time and money investments.  Practice self care and treat yourself well.  Respect and enforce your boundaries and strive to meet your needs.  That way you relate to others without neediness.  You won’t need anything from others.  People can feel that, and it’s attractive.

Intuitively, when I wanted a bigger social circle I thought that there was something I needed to do “out there”.  I needed to meet more people.  I needed to get out of the house more.  Those things are great, but if you do those things you will have far greater rewards and results if you can learn to be content and happy with yourself first.

The Big Three

It’s been said that these are the big three in personal development.  If you can get health, wealth, and relationships all working in-sync, then you’ll feel that flow of life and things will lean towards spiraling upwards.

Accomplishing Big Things

When I read Atomic Habits, it made me appreciate the small things.  Small habits over time can lead to big accomplishments or big bombs that you have to deal with later.

I think it’s human nature to want to go to big accomplishments quickly.  We want to be able to play and sing the beautiful song we hear right after we hear it.  We want to have the great bodies we see others have instantly.  We want to have success in our careers overnight.

Intuitively I want to jump right into having and accomplishing big things, but ironically they come from the small recurring habits over time.

Are there any counterintuitive solutions that have blown your mind?

I’m All Over The Place – Gary V Video

I feel this guy Gary is talking to.  He is me so much!

Listen to this to get some insight as to what you should be doing during this pandemic if you’re wondering.

I’ve listened to Gary V’s videos, and many times I have mixed feelings about them…if I had to guess why I’d say it’s because of the wide range of people he features – many of whom I can’t relate to.  But I can certainly relate to this man below, and I really resonate with the advice he gave.

It hit me when he said people put money and entrepreneurship on a pedestal because it’s something they’ve never had, but they want.  But is it a “god-given” gift? As in…were you naturally blessed with it?  It seems like his central message was love and work with what you’ve got and who you are.

Spending 3 Months A Year With People You Don’t Like 150 150 admin

Spending 3 Months A Year With People You Don’t Like

Working days are the days in the year that aren’t holidays or weekends.  In the United States there are 252 working days out of 366 this year (because it’s a leap year).    If you multiply 252 X 8 hour workday you get 2016 hours.  How many days is 2016 hours you ask?  It’s 84 days. What does this mean?

If you don’t like your coworkers, get ready to spend 84 days out of these 366 days of the year around them.  That’s a lot of time right?  Imagine if you could take those 84 days and spend them around people you do like!  Over the course of 5 years you’ll add an extra year+ around people you like.

OR

What if you go to a job where no one wants to be there…where you are all in agreement the job sucks, but people are just doing it for the money.  Imagine the energy of that space and the feelings you’re around.  Then multiply that feeling by 84 days!  Imagine how much time 84 days is in terms of memories, emotions, etc.  It’s going to be somewhere around that year after year if you stay in the United States.

Make a decision to seek out a way to make income that aligns with people who inspire you.  People you respect.  People you are proud of.  People you generally like.  It’s your ability to respond…or your responsibility to create this.
